El barrio de Salamanca, recognized as one of the most distinguished neighborhoods in Madrid, is one of the most elegant and exclusive areas in the city. This district, which stands out for its perpendicular streets and its special regular checkerboard layout, has become a municipality of reference and has evolved into an icon of luxury, culture and gastronomy, and has one of the most outstanding Golden Miles in the country.

In spite of being traditionally a residential area, especially for the country's political and economic elites, Salamanca is nowadays one of the most important luxury fashion areas in Madrid, where there are other activities such as business, diplomatic and especially commercial activities.

Public transport in Salamanca

Salamanca has excelent connections to Madrid's extensive public transport network. The district has 17 metro stations, including different lines, such as 2 (Goya, Manuel Becerra), 4 (Serrano, Velázquez) or 5 (Diego de León, Nuñez de Balboa), as well as numerous bus lines. It additionally has direct access to Cercanías trains, with the Recoletos station, which connects the municipality with both regional and national trains.

Bus: another transport option is the bus, which operates both within the city of Madrid and in nearby municipalities. In addition, there are night bus lines, commonly known as 'búho', which make it possible to travel by bus at any time.

Cercanías train: to get around the areas farther from the city center, there is a Cercanías train service. These trains connect the outskirts with the city center and operate from 5am to 00:00.

Metro: Madrid has 12 metro lines and more than 300 stations operating from 6am to 1:30am.

In this case, for everyday shopping it has large supermarkets, such as Mercadona, Carrefour or Alcampo, but it also has traditional markets where you can find high quality products, like the Mercado de la Guindalera, or the Mercado de la Paz, a renowned historical food market.

The district has a complete healthcare offer, including several clinics, pharmacies and both public and private hospitals, such as the Gregorio Marañón Hospital or the Ruber Juan Bravo University Hospital. In addition, the municipality has recognized gym chains and wellness centers for those who wish to maintain an active lifestyle.

Cultural centers

Madrid has public buildings that host cultural activities designed for all audiences. From exhibitions to artists' projects, presentations, workshops or festivals, they offer endless possibilities. In Salamanca, located in the Plaza de Colón, we find the Emilia Pardo Bazán Cultural Center, a subway space that hosts a reading room, a children's playroom, a conference center and an exhibition space.

Government services

Additionally to the citizen service offices spread throughout the city, the municipality of Salamanca is home to state buildings such as the Ministry of Finance and Public Function, and it hosts several embassies, including the Embassy of Italy. These Embassy is located in the Marqués de Amboage Palace, one of the most emblematic buildings in the city.

Schools and libraries

Families with children will find a wide variety of schools and educational centers, such as the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Pilar, which has children from preschool to high school. In addition, the Salamanca neighborhood has the most emblematic library in the capital, the National Library of Spain, with the best resources for both students and those who require information or simply need to learn new things.

Salamanca is the perfect neighborhood for those who want to discover new stores, restaurants, hotels, rooftops... Strolling through its streets is an invitation to explore new spaces, from exclusive boutiques and elegant restaurants to cozy cafes, terraces and terraces. Salamanca offers excellent opportunities to live new experiences in an environment where style and luxury are in abundance.

Cultural activities

Madrid is a city with an important cultural and artistic richness and has some of the most renowned museums and theaters in the national scene. In Salamanca, there are some of the most outstanding museums such as the National Archaeological Museum or La Casa de la Moneda. In addition, located on Jorge Juan Street, we find the Nuevo Teatro Alcalá, an historical building that has hosted some of the most successful musicals in Madrid, such as "Grease", "Billy Elliot" or "Matilda".

Eating out

In the last few years the Salamanca neighborhood has become one of the main gastronomic spots in Madrid. In this area you can find some of the best restaurants in the city, such as Kabuki, La Maruca or Lobito de Mar. Furthermore, in the Mercado de la Paz, you can find Casa Dani, the place known for having the best tortilla de patata (Spanish omelette) in the city.

Going out

Salamanca is also known for being one of the most animated districts of the city. Its bars, restaurants and terraces are full every day with a very festive and lively atmosphere. In addition, it has some of the most trendy nightclubs and discos like Gunilla, Vandido, Rubicon or the discotheque Ištar, located in Serrano 41.

Parks and green areas

Although it does not belong to Salamanca neighborhood, the Retiro Park, the main green area of Madrid, is located a few steps away from the Puerta de Alcalá. A great place to walk, play sports and enjoy a natural environment in the big city. In addition, we can find more remote and charming green areas, such as the Jardines de Eva Duarte de Perón or la Quinta de la Fuente del Berro Park.

The Salamanca neighborhood is a municipality that combines elegance, history, culture and modernity, being one of the most attractive and desirable places both to live and to discover and get lost in its streets to find very special corners.
